Pigeon Forge

n years past, Pigeon Forge has been dubbed the No. 1 shopping destination in the South by the likes of such publications as Southern Living magazine. In addition to the glowing reviews it has received as a shopper's paradise, Pigeon Forge is also becoming an outdoor lover's dream. This is primarily due to the diverse outdoor recreational opportunities one can take advantage of when they are within 800 square miles of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some of these opportunities include camping, fishing, hiking, backpacking, and whitewater rafting.

Once known as Fanshiers, after Richard Fanshiers – one of the area's earliest settlers, the town was later renamed "Pigeon" due to the river and "Forge" from the Old Mill iron works that once operated on the river. The Old Mill (on the National Register of Historic Sites) takes you back to the community that once thrived here beside the Pigeon River. The peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains serve as a picturesque backdrop to this bustling town. Activities for the young, as well as the young at heart are aplenty: arcades, bumper cars, helicopter rides, live entertainment, miniature golf, and shopping.
