The Great Smoky Mountains National Park can be accessed by way of six entrances.
Aside from the two main entrances in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and
Cherokee, North Carolina, visitors can enter into the Park in Townsend, Tennessee
(a small town billed as the "Peaceful Side of the Smokies") and
through three lesser-known entrances located in the towns of Cosby, Cataloochee, and Wears
Valley. Gatlinburg, Tenn and Cherokee, NC are at the northern and southern
points of Newfound Gap Road - the only road that completely
traverses the National Park. In addition, there are more lodging opportunities at these two points of the Park boundary. (Purchase
Park maps.)
